Leadership. Purpose.
Service.
For over 79 years, SEI has stood beside the essential workforce — the teachers, first responders, civil servants, and university staff who build the foundation of American society. Founded January 7, 1947, we are a 100% volunteer-led, member-driven organization committed to national impact.

Our Mission
Built by the Workforce. For the Workforce.
STATE EMPLOYEES INC (SEI) was established on January 7, 1947, with a singular conviction: that those who serve the public deserve access to the same quality of life, financial tools, and community resources as anyone else.
Today, SEI is a 501(c)(7) social welfare organization and a fiscally sponsored project of The Foundation for American Service (FAS), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Together, we deliver a national network of member benefits — from hardship relief and cost-of-living tools to recreation, travel, and community programming.
We serve federal, state, city, county, and township employees; teachers; university students and staff; hospital workers; and all first responders — police, fire, EMT, FEMA, and Homeland Security — across all 50 states.

“A nation is built on the backs of those who serve in silence. SEI ensures their sacrifice is met with support.”

A Legacy of Service
The Heart of SEI: Our Volunteers
Since our founding in 1947, SEI has operated on the extraordinary generosity of volunteers who give their time, expertise, and heart to advance a mission larger than themselves. From the earliest board members who typed newsletters by hand to today’s digital-era administrators managing a nationwide platform — every era of SEI is defined by selfless service.
Volunteer board and team members receive complimentary full membership in exchange for one day per week of service — evaluated by work ethic and task completion, not clocked hours. Because we trust the people who serve us.
We honor every volunteer who has walked through our doors. Their names live on — forever celebrated — in SEI’s Memory Lane.
